Musical Hand Kite

Make your own hand kite and use it as you listen to music. Can you make the kite’s movements match the sounds you hear?

What you will need:

  • Paper: plain or coloured if you have it
  • Pens and pencils
  • Scissors
  • Toilet roll tube
  • Paper clips
  • Ribbons – you can always create your own from strips of paper
  • Glue or cellotape

1. Cut the kite shape

  • Choose your paper
  • Measure around your hand
  • Fold and then cut the paper to make your kite shapes

2. Time to decorate

  • Colour one side of both kites
  • Add music symbols, drawings or pictures

3. Assembly

  • Cut the toilet roll to make the finger handle
  • Stick it to the back of one kite
  • Stick the second kite over the top

It should hold together like this:

4. Finishing touches

  • Add ribbons to your kite
  • You can use a paper clip so you can change the ribbon when you like or make your own ribbons using paper

Now that you are ready to use your kite, you can start moving about to music…

Hold your kite still until the solo violin starts to play. Can you walk around at the same time? Keep your feet in time to the sounds of the orchestra.
